A fine unmarked 19th century eye bath made from Sheffield silver plate.

This form of Old Sheffield plate was developed around 1770 and consists of a sheet of silver each side of a piece of copper. The technique was relatively labour intensive but was still cheaper than solid silver and remained in common us until about 1840 when the electroplating of silver became viable and more widespread.
