19th C Tonsillotome by Collin

Tonsillotome with ebony handle - Arnold & Son

19th C Tonsillotome by Collin

A complete and fully functional 19th Century Tonsillotome by Collin of Paris with a crosshatched ebony handle and two sizes of blade. The mechanism works flawlessly and the tempered blue steel visible is evidence of the high build quality.

Ivory Tonsillectomy Guillotine

A 19th century tonsillotome, or tonsil guillotine made from steel, blued steel and with a crosshatched ivory handle. The handle pivots on a hinge from left to right which allows access to either tonsils from the right or left side of the mouth. The loop would be placed around the tonsil and pushing the pointed steel prong forward would anchor the tonsil. The central shaft would be held with one hand and the handle retracted with the other causing the tonsil to be cut.

Antique Tonsillotome by Reynders & Co

An antique tonsil guillotine or tonsillotome with a rare scissor mechanism. Closing the scissor grip advances the blade across the enclosed loop and at the same time closes and raises a pair of spiked forceps which would grip and hold the excised tonsils. The blade is razor sharp and the delicate mechanism still works smoothly and would remove a tonsil as cleanly as it did 100 years ago. Signed by "Reynders & Co" who were quality instrument makers based in New York from the 1880s.

Vintage European Tonsillotome

An attractive early 20th century tonsillotome with nicely fashioned Bakelite or early plastic handle which has been moulded to accommodate the surgeons hand. When the thumb rest is pushed forwards the framed knife edge is pulled through and past the three pronged fork, effectively excising the tonsillar tissue with a one handed procedure leaving the other hand free to apply haemostatic pressure to the bleeding tonsillar bed.

Laryngoscopy

Laryngoscope by Mathieu c1880   Krishaber Laryngoscope c1865

Laryngoscope by Mathieu c1880

An indirect laryngoscope (because the larynx was not seen directly, but indirectly through the reflection of a mirror). The gag reflex would be suppressed using crushed ice (after 1884 cocaine spray was used as a local anaesthetic). The bottom blade of the speculum would hold down the tongue whilst the top blade would be positioned against the soft palate so that a light source would illuminate the mirror. In turn the mirror would reflect back a view of the larynx and glottis. The first laryngoscope was attributed to Manuel Garcia (a Spanish singing professor) in 1854. It was quickly adopted by the medical profession; initially Ludwik Turk in Vienna, Czermak in Budapest and in England Morell Mackenzie pioneered the development of laryngology. This rare French example signed Mathieu Paris (Brevete) probably dates to the last 1/4 of the 19th century

Krishaber Laryngoscope c1865

Krishaber was one of Czermak's students and one of the pioneers of the laryngoscope. This French example in his name dates to 1865 as illustrated in 'Le corps exploré' and comes with its original fitted case, lenses and mirrors. An example of a later model can be seen here. The last illustration show how the apparatus would be used with an artificial light source, but it was also possible to use sunlight for illumination. Case dimensions 230 x 100 x 35 mm.

19th C Brunton Otoscope by Maw

18th C Nasal Insufflator? in Shagreen Etui

19th C Brunton Otoscope by Maw

A complete set in its original box dating the late 19th century. It is rare to find these without wear to the silver plate but this piece is in mint condition and signed "Maw London". There is a similar example in the London Science Museum.

18th C Nasal Insufflator? in Shagreen Etui

An 18th century shagreen and silver case containing a silver topped hand cut glass bottle and a heavy silver syringe. The glass stopper is fixed and I am not sure about the contents but this set is likely to have had a medical use. Similar medical syringes have been used to administer solutions and or medications (see last picture). I believe that the contents of the bottle would have been titrated into the syringe and sprayed into either nostril. Probably for the relief of nasal congestion or sinusitis. If any one has further information do please contact me.

Horn Silver Aural Specula (Hessler)

Silver Nasal Speculum (Brevette)

A rare boxed paediatric nasal speculum marked Brevete SGDG (a common French Patent mark). The box, hinges and latch are sound but there are signs of wear to the leather. The speculum is in perfect working condition with the screw extending the blades so that the physician could visualise the nares.

Cased Ear Syringe (Maw Son & Thompson)   Dr Dettweiler's Sputum Flask

Cased Ear Syringe (Maw Son & Thompson)

A 19th century ear syringe by Maw Son & Thomspon. The syringe is made from nickel plated brass and is in excellent condition with no loss of plating. Both the plunger and the finger rests unscrew. The plunger moves freely but now produces little suction (which could easily be remedied). There are three attachments of different sizes, one made from bone. The embossed leather case with purple velvet lining is in very good condition and is marked on the lid with Maw Son and Thompson's motif

Dr Dettweiler's Sputum Flask

A German sputum pot for English consumption (so to speak). The expectorate was coughed into the funnel of the larger opening and could be emptied by unscrewing the small cap at the bottom. "The pocket vial (flask) for sufferers from cough made according to directions from Dr Dettweiler Privy Medical Councillor of Falkenstein Taunus is intended to serve for the reception of the secretions of the bronchial tubes and lungs; its use is more simple and cleanly than that of the pocket handkerchief, or floor ...."

Pocket Sputum Flask

A 20th century nickel plated sputum pot used for people with consumption (advanced tuberculosis) or bronchiectasis as a hygienic alternative to the floor. Pressure on the catch opens the sprung circular lid from which a funnel drains into the container. When full the contents could be drained by unscrewing the smaller cap. In near mint condition.

Zello-Punkt Nasal Corrector   Silver Plated Tongue Depressor by Arnold

Snuff box "Metallic Tractors" early 1800s

A remarkable contraption designed to correct nasal deformity or septal deviation. It was completely ineffective and had only a brief window of popularity in France in the early 20th century. The metal device was held in position over the head and nose with an elasticated band and the screws were then tightened so as, in theory, to correct any deviation from the midline. A rather beautifully engraved and and attractive little folly from medical history.

Silver Plated Tongue Depressor by Arnold

A silver plated antique tongue depressor which folds in two for easy storage. One end is smaller than the other allowing for paediatric or adult examination. Both sections are marked Arnold. The piece dates to the late 19th century.

Ambrotype of Man Wearing Ear Trumpet C 1850   Antique Photographs of Ear Trumpets

Ambrotype of Man Wearing Ear Trumpet C 1850

A man wearing an ear trumpet is an unusual subject for any photo. Much effort was made to deliberately conceal ear trumpets ... this ambrotype by contrast suggest a proud owner. Perhaps it was akin to have the latest PDA. Ambrotypes developed the photograph directly onto a glass plate coated with silver salts and backed with a black varnish. Because they were so fragile this needed mounting behind another piece of glass which was often then mounted in a metal frame. In this example the embossed leather box case holds an ornate gold metal frame with finely decorated velvet in the opposite face. Ambrotypes went out of vogue around the 1850s in favour of daguerrotypes.

Antique Photographs of Ear Trumpets

Antique photographs of hearing aids, one showing a man using an ear trumpet, another of a seated woman holding a conversation tube. Both are of American origin and date to the turn of the century. Because of the time required for exposure these would both have been posed rather than spontaneous shots.

Rein Grand Opera Dome Ear Trumpet (long)

Grand Opera Dome Ear trumpet (Rein)

Rein Silver plated Grand Opera Dome Ear Trumpet

These exquisitely carved 19th century aids by Rein are considered to represent the pinnacle of artistry and design in antique ear trumpets. The Grand Opera Dome is a large piece which is extraordinarily rare and I know only of one other example in a private collection. Many of Rein's similarly styled trumpets from this period have wear to the silver plate or physical damage. Unusually this one is in perfect condition throughout. Around the lower  circumference of the dome is engraved 'F C Rein and Son patentees sole inventors and only makers 108 Strand London'. Dimensions 190 x 90 mm

Grand Opera Dome Ear trumpet (Rein)

A rare and beautifully engraved late 19th century Grand Opera Dome ear trumpet by Rein in excellent condition and with minimal loss of silver plating. Signed in around the circumference in his fashion 'F C Rein and Son patentees sole inventors and only makers 108 Strand London' This trumpet came in two sizes, with a short and a long earpiece. This is the one with the short earpiece, the longer version can also be seen on Phisick. The dimensions are 90 x 125 mm

French Silver Plated Dome Ear Trumpet

Silver Plated Ear Trumpet by Down Bros

French Silver Plated Dome Ear Trumpet

An attractive silver plated ear trumpet. Although it has a dome configuration this example is not from London but is French, dating to the turn of the century. The grille is ornate with natural curves typical of the art nouveau period. The earpiece is in silver plated metal and the trumpet is unsigned. The body has a tiny dent near the apex which is difficult to see. Unsigned  Dimensions: 130 mm x 60 mm

Silver Plated Small Ear Trumpet   Queen Conch Shell Ear Trumpet

Silver Plated Small Ear Trumpet

A very attractive little silver plated ear trumpet with ivory ear piece and an ornately carved grille. A 19th century ear trumpet in excellent condition and made unusual by its diminutive size, which is more noticeable when compared to a Downs Ear Trumpet in the last picture. Dimensions 75mm high x 53 mm diameter.

Queen Conch Ear Trumpet

A seldom seen Queen Conch Shell ear trumpet. There is a similar ear trumpet in Bennion which is an earlier variation. These shells are said to be the musical instrument of mermaids, the Conch is now an endangered and international trade is severely restricted. This trumpet is 15cm long and 6.5cm diameter. The ear piece tube is made from unplated brass. The actual earpiece is I think an extension of the same brass tube which has been made into a bulbous shape and painted black. There is some loss of plating to the setting which mounts it on the shell. The shell itself is in perfect condition. Likely to be of American origin and dating to 1880.

Silver Plate Ear Trumpet (Hawksley)   Child's Silver Ear Trumpet

Hawskley Silver Ear Trumpet

A fantastic example of an early 20th century silver plated ear trumpet by Hawskley. The trumpet comes in its original box with the postal address and owner legible. I cannot make out the date. In superb condition and with beautifully ornate silver beading around the outlet. The trumpet is marked "Hawksley 351 Oxford Street London". The original ivory ear piece is has no cracks and the trumpet is in excellent overall condition.

Child's Silver Ear Trumpet

An unusual ear trumpet made from hammered unmarked silver on a silver chain designed to be carried around the neck. The size of the trumpet is such that this could only have been used for a child; presumably a privileged one from a wealthy family to have been able to afford an aid like this. The ornately hand carved grille can be removed. So too can the hand blown glass ear piece. The trumpet works very well. Dating this piece is difficult, but it is certainly 19th century and possibly earlier and likely to have been of European origin.

Antique Brass Ear Trumpet by F C Rein

A striking large brass ear trumpet circa 1850 signed on the central cartouche "F C Rein Inventor 108 Strand". The original dark copper-wash finish (which can be seen on the inside of the bell) has been taken down to reveal the brass dome which has remained in very good condition. The original grille is missing and the rests where this would have been secured can be seen on the inside of the dome. The earpiece is ivory and is fixed. Dimensions Height 120 mm Diameter 90 mm.

Convoluted segmented 19th Century Ear Horn

A rare 19th century ear horn made from tin. Beehive Ear Trumpet Red Celluloid

An early 20th century ear trumpet in a rare beehive configuration made from celluloid. The celluloid is in good condition. There has been wear to the paint finish but the overall condition of the trumpet is excellent with the exception a few very minor dings. The painted surface of the fixed ear piece has worn away and I am unsure about the underlying material which could be Bakelite but appears to have a grain

19th C Leather Lined Telescopic Ear Trumpet

Similar in design to the two piece celluloid trumpets this telescopic aid is slightly older, dating to the end of the 19th century. I cannot be sure what the underlying base metal is because it has been completely and rather skillfully leather lined. Although there is some brass visible at the join, it is actually quite light and I suspect it is made from tin. It is rare to find the leather in such superb condition throughout. The earpiece is made form ivory and is fixed.

Antique French Brass and Ivory Ear Trumpet

A rare antique French ear trumpet in brass. This large late 19th century piece has an unusual configuration. The trumpet section extends from a relatively narrow body which curves to end in a fitted ivory ear piece. There is a fixed joint mid body. An ear trumpet and ear training device by Royal in Paris from the first quarter of the 20th century. The 'mouthpiece' is made from Bakelite or Vulcanite, the ear piece from gutta percha and both are in excellent condition.

Vibrophobe Audiometry Ear Tube

A very unusual implement designed to test bone conduction. The tiny ear tube dissembles to reveal a metal disc which is held firm by two springs at either side. When inserted in the ear the small metal dumbbell is struck against the rim of the ear tube and causes the disk to vibrate. The resulting bizarre twanging noise sounds more like something out of the 'Magic Roundabout'. Whether or not this could quantify bone conduction is dubious - but it is nonetheless a superb little instrument.

Earmaster Gold Cased Hearing Aid

Mallock-Armstrong Ear Defenders

In 1905 work started on designing mechanical devices to limit the damage done by gunfire noise. Mallock-Armstrong designed these plugs in 1914 and they were extensively used in World War 1. The central rod is for removing ear wax from the plugs

Earmaster Gold Cased Hearing Aid

This is one of the latest hearing devices in the collection and the only electronic one. The Earmaster 550 Hearing Aid was manufactured in 1965 and contains an integrated circuit. This custom made in-the-ear hearing aid was molded into a gold casing to increase cosmetic appeal rather than for the hypoallergenic benefits. It did not catch on and 1965 was the only year it was made, which makes it rather rare. The gold casing is engraved 5VLOC.
