A rare, finely engraved and delicately turned ivory nipple shield.

This would have been used by a breast feeding mother to protect against sore nipples. The prominent lines of Schreger are in keeping with elephant ivory. This is a difficult piece to date but they were most poular in the late 18th and first half of the 19th century.
