It was custom in china for ladies to describe their ills to the doctor by pointing to an ivory effigy.

This was considered preferable and less embarrassing than having to point to one’s own anatomy. This is an exquisitely hand carved piece. Note the ornate engraving on the shoes. The patina suggests some age and the piece is signed.
