Pelicans frequently left the remnants of the dental root which required instruments to prize them from their sockets. The goats foot elevator was named because of the appearance of its deeply cleft head which was hollowed between two points.

This instrument was sometimes used to loosen a tooth or root before extraction by other means. The octagonal handle in the style of Garengot is made from ebony.
