This 19th century amniotomy instrument is made with a crosshatched ebony and carved ivory handle.
The body has a similar appearance to a normal uterine sound. However, pressure on the thumb piece pushes a spring loaded sharp steel point 2 cm from the distal end. This instrument would have been used to puncture the amniotic sac and induce labour.
