One of the oldest form of of listening device was a hollowed out curved animal horn held to the ear.

This example has has a horn ear piece which screws onto the narrow end and distinguishes it from a powder horn. The trumpet section has an extended metal flange to increase the collecting area. The animal horn has a beautiful patina and considerable age but judging by the appearance of the metal work is 19th century.
