A heavy silver mounted shagreen surgical instrument case dating to circa 1720. A very similar piece is seen on colour plate 11 of Elizabeth Bennnion’s “Antique Medical Instruments”.

Instruments contained in a similar but earlier case in the Science Museum include tortoise shell thumb lancets, scissors, forceps, tongue depressor and a fleam.
